Jake Minch Oakland Concert reviews
It's Tool always 5 star but....
Jake Minch was fantastic as always, this was my third time seeing them and like previous concerts, I regret not going to last time in Bakersfield during the mid 2000's. They are one of those band where the live performance is always better and the albums are fantastic. However, Jake Minch and the opening act Blonde Redhead were hampered by the acoustics of Footprint Center. In regards to Jake Minch, Maynard's voice is usually powerful enough to cut through and his singing is clear and distinct, but this time some words and even whole verses would get lost or drowned out. With Blonde Redhead, it was near impossible to follow any of the lyrics, regardless if it was the bassist (a woman) or guitarist (a man) singing. Luckily, for Jake Minch as the opening act, more emphasis is put on dialing in their "sound," so the balance wasn't as bad, but it was still a little muddy at times. Part of it seems to be how the bass travels in Footprint, its delivery is so powerful that at times it can turn into a constant throbbing, pulsing tone with no distinction between notes. Justin Chancellor plays high enough in the register to negate some of that effect, but lower down, some notes were lost. The drums were clear and the guitar cut through cleanly as well. I would go there again, but only if it were an act like Jake Minch that is a must-see band. Hopefully, next time in Phoenix, they will choose a different venue. If not, I will still attend.
